Here it is, our latest Facebook statistics and demographics update and the world’s most popular social networking site continues to grow around the world and even further here in the UK.

With the recent news that Bebo may be closed down in the not too distant future and the numbers continue to fall on MySpace, Facebook has continued to dominate the market.

UK Facebook Statistics

As ever, the number of Facebook users continues to grow here in the UK, with now over 25 million active accounts. The rate of increase is not as significant as the rises in 2009 but by no means has the website stagnated. Most importantly, the statistics continue to improve on website usage and time on site.

Social Media Statistics February 2010

Here’s your latest round up of Social Media stats for February 2010!

Social Networking websites continue to grow on a huge scale with Facebook recently announcing that they have now reached over 400 million worldwide users and Twitter soon to be reaching the benchmark of 50 million tweets per day. Facebook and Twitter also both boasted a  triple-digit growth in 2009 with social networking now accounting for 11% of all time spent online.

Not only have user figures grown across social media websites but so has usage and time spent on social networking sites. A report from The Nielsen Company showed that there has been a huge increase of 82% in time spent on social networking sites. Across the globe over the past year average time spent on social networking sites grew from 3 hours per month to 5.5 hours. In addition Nielsen concluded that overall social media sites such as Facebook are now the most common homepages for users and that people now spend the majority of theit internet time using social networks or blogs.

Forrester also recently produced some interesting stats about adults using social media. Some of the findings included:

  • A third of adults post at least once a week to social sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • A quarter of adults publish a blog and upload video/audio they created.
  • Nearly 60% maintain a profile on a social networking site.
  • 70% Read blogs, tweets and watch UGC video.

UK Social Media Stats

The popularity of Social Media continues to rise rapidly in the UK, now accounting for almost 11% of the share of UK Internet visits – continually closing the gap on search and entertainment websites.

Facebook’s growth in the UK continues with a reported 24 million active users. It now accounts for over half of all visits to social networking sites in the UK with YouTube sitting in second with over 17% of visits. Despite the media coverage and growth of Twitter over the past year the micro-blogging site makes up only around 2% of visits to social media sites in the UK, only just surpassing Bebo.

Facebook, the worlds most popular social networking site continues to grow in 2010. Following the announcement that the site had reached over 350 million worldwide users towards the end of 2009, user numbers have continued to increase as the social networking giants continue to dominate the market. Below are some interesting Facebook Statistics and Demographics for our first update in 2010.

Facebook Worldwide Stats


The number of Facebook users is now over 360 million and growing across the world. Over 70% of Facebook users are now outside of the United States. Below displays Facebook’s popularity by Continent.

Interesting Facebook User Statistics

Around half of all active Facebook users log into their account on any given day. More than 55 million status updates are posted each day and more than 2.5 billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month.

Facebook Pages and Facebook Mobile

We thought, you might also like some information this time with regards to Facebook Pages. As the number of users continue to grow, so does the interest brands have in Facebook and over the past 12 months the number of Facebook Pages and groups have grown dramatically. There are now more than 1.6 million active Facebook Fan Pages which have over 5.3 billion fans. The average users becomes a fan of two pages per month.
There is no doubt that Facebook can contribute a large proportion of its usage statistics to mobile devices and social media on the go. There are more than 65 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices and furthermore the use of Facebook by the 46.3m Opera Mini mobile users rose 600% last year research  by Opera revealed global revealed. It now means that Facebook takes the number one spot from Russian Social Network Vkontakte for being the most popular mobile social network.

The number of Facebook users continues to grow here in the UK, with over 23 million active Facebook users. The rate of increase may have slowed slightly over the past couple of months but overall user figures continue to rise.

There are now over 23 million active Facebook users in the UK according to the Social Ads platform.

Facebook has grown massively over the past 2 years, with the UK usage figures growing by over 13 million since January 2008. Something that is particularly interesting is that Facebook user numbers in the UK have steadily grown at a very similar rate for the past 6 months and from July 2009 user numbers have grown by around one million users per month.

We have also conducted further research into Facebook user stats and Facebook user demographics in the UK.

Social Media Statistics February 2010 now available >>

Here is a round up of all things social media for December 2009, with some interesting stats and data.

Overall usage of social networking sites continues to grow rapidly, with Facebook, the UK’s most used social networking site recently revealing that they have surpassed the 350 million worldwide user milestone. Facebook have achieved an additional 100 million users in under 5 months (250m in July). Here in the UK, Facebook now has over 23 million users.

Below are some graphs depicting the rise of Facebook in the UK over the past couple of years and the demise of their once great competitors MySpace and Bebo:

But Facebook isn’t the only Social Media site that is increasing in popularity in the UK. The launch of Twitter and it’s huge increase in usage over the past 12 months has given Facebook something to think about. LinkedIn, the business social networking site also continues to steadily grow.

Econsultancy also recently compiled a great list of interesting Social Media Stats:

  • Social networks and blogs are the 4th most popular online activities online, including beating personal email. 67% of global users visit member communities and 10% of all time spent on the internet is on social media sites.
  • If Facebook were a country, it would be the third most populated place in the world.
  • 80% of companies use, (or are planning to use), LinkedIn as their primary tool to find employees during the course of this year. The site has just celebrated reaching its 45-millionth membership.
  • It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million listeners. Terrestrial TV took 13 years to reach 50 million users. The internet took four years to reach 50 million people… In less than nine months, Facebook added 100 million users.
  • Wikipedia currently has more than 13 million articles in more than 260 different languages. The site attracts over 60 million unique users a month and it’s often hotly debated that the information it contains is more reliable than any printed Encyclopaedia.
  • The most recent figure of blogs being indexed by Technorati currently stands at 133 million. The same report into the Blogosphere also revealed that on average, 900,000 blog posts are created within a single 24-hour period.
  • It’s been suggested that YouTube is likely to serve over 75 billion video streams to around 375 million unique visitors during this year.
  • The top three people on Twitter (Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears) have more combined followers than the entire population of Austria.*
  • According to Socialnomics, if you were paid $1 for every time an article was posted on Wikipedia, you would earn $156.23 per hour.
  • The online bookmarking service, Delicious, has more than five million users and over 150 million unique bookmarked URLs.
  • Since April this year, Twitter has been receiving around 20 million unique visitors to the site each month, according to some analytical sources.
  • Formed in 2004, Flickr now hosts more than 3.6 billion user images.
  • Universal McCann reports that 77% of all active internet users regularly read blogs.
