Since the huge rise in Twitter usage there has been a growing fascination with the so called ‘real-time web’. This has been particularly evident in recent weeks with news spreading of the major internet brands reportedly working on their search tools. Search Engine and Social Networking giants Google, Bing, Facebook and Twitter are all working on major changes to improve upon status updates and tweets to do a better job of indexing the web.

logossocial

Of all the major online brands it seems as though Microsoft have won the race to get their update made first. Bing now displays recent Tweets from well-known people / celebrities. It seems that Microsoft were just rushing to win the race rather than implementing an exciting new tool to its search engine. The only way you can actually see these results is when you physically type in a celebrity name and ‘Twitter’ in the same search query.

The latest announcements from Facebook also suggest that they are looking at the advantages of ‘real-time web’. It seems as though Facebook is looking to transition towards becoming more public – some have said even more Twitter-like. Reports from last week also announced that Facebook will be beta testing a new publishing feature in which your Facebook status updates can be optionally made public. Essentially, this will allow users to use Facebook a lot like Twitter broadcasting your updates publically.

Recent research from OPA reaffirms Display Advertising drives search.

The combination of display advertising and search marketing is a highly discussed topic, particularly how they affect one another. Many online marketers are highly skeptical about how display fits into the overall online marketing mix and how effective it truly is.

This may soon change following a report from OPA which outlined the value of Display Advertising to overall online marketing strategies. The study called “The Silent Click: Building Brands Online”, compares the behaviors of consumers exposed to online display advertising vs. those in a control group.

The study analysed consumer behaviors of those Internet users who were exposed to online display advertising and from there began measuring three key consumer actions: 1) searches conducted related to the advertisers’ brands; 2) site visitation, the traffic driven to the advertisers’ site and 3) consumer spending, the e-commerce transactions related to the advertisers’ brands.” The main results from this are as follows:

  • Twenty percent conduct related searches and one in three visit the brands’ sites after viewing a display ad
  • These users spent over 50% more time than the average visitor to these sites and consumed many more pages
  • 10% more money was spent by these users online overall, with spending significantly higher on product categories related to the advertised brands

OPA1

The vast majority of those exposed to display advertising in the study may not have clicked on the display ads but later performed activities, such as searches for the advertisers brand or trademark and site visits, that indicated they had in fact been influenced to some degree by the display ads:

OPA2

The users ecposed to the display ads were found to also be considerably more engaged than people in the control group:

Facebook-The-Movie

Facebook has more than 200 million active users worldwide and is most certainly an online phenomenon but will its popularity convert from small computer screen to the big screen?

Well, Columbia Pictures certainly hopes so, as it continues to advance in its plans to bring Facebook’s founding story to the cinema.

The film is due to be titled “The Social Network” and is scheduled to start production later in the year. According to some sources Columbia is in advanced talks with director David Fincher about the project.

The film will depict Mark Zuckerberg’s, the founder of Facebook, story of how a Havard student’s project became the world’s most popular Social Networking site.

Theres no doubt that this is a truly interesting story, but does it warrant a film? So will you be buying advanced tickets or giving it a miss?

Last week, we reported MySpace’s 30% cut in its US workforce and as predicted the social network is continuing cutbacks across other international offices.

To meet the target of becoming a more ‘efficient and nimble team-orientated company’ MySpace is expected to cut up to 60% of its international staff. This means that MySpace will trim their overseas workforce from 450 to 150 staff members along with up to four office closures outside of America. Even though MySpace is still popular in most countries, they are continuing to lose more and more ground to Social Networking giants Facebook. This is no more evident than here in the UK, where Facebooks dominance over MySpace occured well over a year ago. The UK is a prime example of Facebooks dominance over MySpace and this seems to be replicating in the US where MySpace had long been Social Network leaders but have now fallen behind Facebook in usage.

Yahoo are the latest victim of Facebook’s UK online domination.

Facebook is now the third most visited site in the UK according to a recent report from ComScore.

Facebooks continued growth saw its unique audience numbers rise to 23.4 million in April 2009, with an increase in user numbers of 63% over the past year.

Yahoo lost its top 3 ranking despite recording a growth of their own, however, the 8% increase was made to look minimal in comparison to that of Facebook.
