Twitter have today announced we are soon to break the 50,000,000 tweets-a-day mark which just underlines the massive growth the micro-blogging system has seen in the past 2 years.

Twitter HQ announced “Folks were tweeting 5,000 times a day in 2007. By 2008, that number was 300,000, and by 2009 it had grown to 2.5 million per day. Tweets grew 1,400% last year to 35 million per day. Today, we are seeing 50 million tweets per day—that’s an average of 600 tweets per second. (Yes, we have TPS reports.)”

twitter-monetise

At an event in London recently, Biz Stone – fouder of Twitter – revealed that the social site would be releasing new tools and features in the not too distant future to help publishers and brands monetise their presence on Twitter.

According to Stone, these tools would include an analytical platform: “We’re going to launch a layer of features that allows companies to be better at Twitter, using data ad analytics to ensure they can use it in the best way,” he said.

Stone went on to explain that these services would help news publishers generate extra revenues online commenting: “It’s a difficult time for most news organisations,” he said. “We look forward to opening up the doors to news organisations to see how we can work together.”

Other speakers at the event included Reid Hoffman, founder of business social networking site LinkedIn and Twitter legend Stephen Fry.

Comedian and all round digital and social media enthusiast Fry added in regards to advertising on Twitter: “If Twitter became something that irritated users, banner ads popping up or being governed by a commercial big brother, the community would go off and create their own Twitter.”

Facebook, Twitter and Digg are regarded by many as the three most important Social Media sites out there, but how do they compare…

Recent reports from ComScore revealed that almost a third of all internet users across the globe visited Facebook in September, a truly astonishing fact. This is almost a 100% increase from the same month last year in which 17% of worldwide internet users visited the Social networking site.

It’s certainly not only Facebook that has seen growth in the social media market. If media and press coverage for each site was compared, Twitter would almost definately be the top of the pile. However, in terms of comparative visitor figures both Twitter and Digg struggle to make impact on the same graph as Facebook.

Having said that, Digg has also seen a large growth over the past twelve months, increasing unique worldwide visitor numbers to 32 million, more than doubling last years total of 15 million. In addition, page views have tripled to 171 million.

Below are some very interesting graphs showing individual site growth.

Econsultancy have revealed their latest set of Social Media Stats, which certainly make for interesting reading.

Brands and social media (Cone)

78% of social media users interact with companies or brands via new media sites and tools, an increase of 32% from 2008.
95% of new media users also believe companies or brands should not only have social media presence, while 89% believe that they should interact with their consumers in this space.

Social network UK market share (Experian Hitwise)

Twitter now receives more web traffic than MySpace in the UK, picking up 1 in every 400 UK internet visits in August, ranking as the 27th most visited website in the UK, one position above MySpace.
Twitter claimed 2.21% of UK visits to social networks, though since this only measures direct visits to the Twitter website and not the various Twitter clients, it may underestimate the real numbers.
Facebook was number one, with 47.5%, followed by YouTube on 16.63%, and Bebo on 4.26%.

Social media and customer experience (Tealeaf via Econsultancy)

Customers who experience problems when shopping online are talking about it on social media sites; 13% this year compared with 8% in 2008.
51% of respondents saying that social media has influenced their online transactions. 75% said their choice of retailer was influenced by what they read on social media sites, while 56% avoided a particular company after reading a bad review.

Advertising on social networks (comScore)

Social networks accounted for 13.8bn display ad impressions in August 2009, which is more than 25% of all display ads viewed online.
The telecommunications, retail and banking sectors were the biggest advertisers on social networks, in that order.

The recent social media stats were taken from a range of sources, including Econsultancy’s Social Media Statistics document, which forms part of the Internet Statistics Compendium, and other reports.
